STAMPEDING TOWARDS EXCELLENCE
Principal Tamara Sterling
It’s hard to believe that the first semester is coming to a close for the students, faculty and staff of Evan E. Worthing High School. It has been a wonderful experience that I'm extremely proud to share with you regarding what we've been doing to promote Evan E. Worthing as THE high School to attend in the Houston Independent School District.
During the 2009-2010 school year we have outlined several goals that we WILL achieve by June 2010. Everyday we are “STAMPEDING TOWARDS EXCELLENCE” and it shows in the culture and climate of our school daily.
Goals for 2009-2010 school year!
Exemplary Status
Worthing has embraced the ambitious goal of being rated EXEMPLARY for the 2010 school year! We are working hard in Math, Science, English and Social Studies. We know we have the talent it takes to get there and we are pressing forward towards the mark of success everyday. We are also working hard to decrease our dropout rate while increasing our graduation rate! Our goal is to graduate 200 seniors with the Class of 2010!
Advanced Placement Courses
Worthing is in the planning phases of increasing our AP offering from 5 courses to 12 courses. Identified teachers are preparing now to promote a College and Career culture by providing our students with increased options to be successful on the post-secondary level. The Courses that will be offered in 2010-2010 school year are:
Post-Secondary Mentor’s Program
Every senior at Worthing High School is assigned a faculty mentor that serves as their Post-Secondary Mentor. The Mentor’s assist their assigned seniors with advice and guidance with the college selection process, financial aid and college transition. The assistance of the PSM is critical to Worthing increasing the number of students being accepted and attending college. Our goal for the Graduating Class of 2010, is to have 100% of our graduating seniors accepted to a minimum of two four-year Colleges or Universities and a minimum of one community college. We will base our success on a minimum of 75% of our students enrolling to the College or University that they have selected to attend.
Freshman Academy
At the high school level, students will encounter a wide variety of choices including elective classes, core classes, varsity level sports, and other extra-curricular activities. These new surroundings can seem overwhelming, often leading to discouragement and poor academic performance. The Freshman Academy at Worthing Senior High School was designed with specific goals that will assist incoming freshman transition from middle school to the high school environment.
Freshman students will experience increased support with core academics, character building, and proper student habits. Worthing is preparing our freshman to succeed at all levels of their academic careers. Our goal also is to decrease the number of students that dropout of school in the freshman class. Our goal is retain all 300 students in Worthing’s freshman class!
EXCELerated Learning Academy
Many of our students at Worthing come to us ready to learn and excited about high school. Unfortunately, there are many students that come to us that have been retained in elementary school two or more years, have difficult time transitioning with result in excessive absences and academic failures. At Worthing we believe that these students cannot be LEFT BEHIND! We see a future for everyone and we believe that child deserves support to achieve academic success.
In January 2010, we will begin our EXCELerated Learning Academy! The Academy will identify 100 students that are overage, have excessive absences or have failed three or more academic courses. Their schedule will be revamped to provide smaller class sizes for individualized attention, online learning opportunities for advancement and credit recovery, links to Houston Community College to earn certifications in various trades and cooperative education opportunities.
Identification Badges and School Uniforms
Safety and security is a high priority at Worthing and we need your assistance to encourage your child to wear their ID badges and Uniforms daily. Our students thrive when they know that their environment is safe and conducive for learning to take place. Our goal is to have 100% of our students entering Worthing with their ID’s out and visible and their uniforms on and properly worn.
